Minister’s Letter

Hello!  It seems odd to be writing this when I’ve only a met about a dozen of you and my first Sunday isn’t until 9 September, but I was keen to get in touch.  We’re excited about being here and are looking forward to settling into life in Lower Earley, and over the next few weeks meeting you all and beginning to get to know you.  We appreciate your prayers as we settle in and our kids, Jack, Lily and Nancy begin gearing up for the new term.

So far we’ve unpacked a stack of boxes and are enjoying making our new home.  Having a garden is fab and a garage (a double one even) is like seventh heaven!!  It was quite emotional when we drove away from our house in Bradford last week.  We lived in a row of tall thin terraced houses and all the neighbours were out (in the rain!) to wave us off.  Our four years in inner city Bradford have left us with many memories and friends, and many lessons learned.  The need and challenge to be real with one another and God, to listen to and follow Him, as well as having fun are among them.

God has brought us to Lower Earley along a winding and adventurous route and we trust that the next 8 years at Trinity will be equally, if not more, adventurous and stimulating.  We feel very blessed since hearing about and being offered the post at Trinity.  So many things fell into place very smoothly, so we agree with Richard and Roger in July/August’s magazine that our coming here “must have been meant to be”.  Lily and Nancy are off to the Piggott School and Jack is to start a BTEC National Diploma in Sport.  We all love the leisure centre being so close and will be using it as much as possible.  I’m a keen runner (and have many other hobbies!) so you may see me out and about.  I hope to do the London Marathon again next year and would love your company, so how about it?  The closing date is 19 October!

Anyway, I’d better get back to some boxes, but despite these we’ll begin inviting you over soon (not all at once!).

I love 2 Timothy 1:6-11 and Philippians 3:12-14.  Why not have a look?

Looking forward to meeting you all, as this new chapter begins for us all.

Every blessing.

Jon

Back to Church Sunday

Sunday 30 September 10.00am

The Great Commission……….. Matthew 28:16-20: Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.  Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.  And surely I am with all of you, to the very end of the age.”

We may not all display the passion of John Wesley or possess the evangelical gifts of Billy Graham but every single one of us has the opportunity to ‘make disciples of all nations’ by inviting, encouraging and bringing just one person to church with us on Sunday 30 September, and by giving them all a warm, Trinity welcome.

The idea is for churches to invite people in their parishes who have had some connection with the church, and also those who have never been churchgoers, to come and see what they are missing.  The key to success, say the organisers, is ‘personal invitation and attention’, which is why we are asking for your help in encouraging these future disciples to come to church and to come back to God.

Invitations will be available in church throughout September and you are asked to:

à         Prayerfully consider just one person whom you could encourage to come to church with you, and invite them.

à         Pray for them and for all others who will be invited.

à         Come with them or offer to meet them before the service.

à         Stay and introduce them to others after the service.

à         Let them know they are welcome to come again.

“And surely I am with all of you, to the very end of the age.”

The Trinity Men’s Walk

Well, we did it!  A week before the deluge, we had perfect weather for the walk along the Kennet from Thatcham.  One pretty straight route, but how we did it was not totally straightforward.
