Trinity Church Buildings Fund

Sponsored Bible Read

Tuesday 16th May 2006 , 9.30am

Why we need to raise money

We will be raising money for Trinity Church Buildings Fund so that we can improve the church building.  In particular, we need to make it more welcoming, provide better disabled access, have a designated place for prayer and improve our facilities for offering hospitality.  Our plans are available for inspection in the church.

At Trinity Church , we have always had a strong tradition of supporting Third World projects and this building project is no exception.  Ten per cent of everything we raise for the Trinity Church Buildings Fund will be donated to Kagando Hospital in Western Uganda towards building a better, more secure guest house for visiting medical staff.

General Information

This is an ambitious project and hopefully everyone will enter into the spirit of the task and enjoy the challenge.  Anyone is welcome to read, whether from this church or elsewhere.  Do you know someone who would love the opportunity to take part?  Let us hope that at the end we will all be proud to say, ‘I was there’.

¨       We will be reading the whole of the Old and New Testaments, starting at Genesis and ending with Revelation.

¨       The reading is expected to take three and a half days.  Please remember that we estimate we will finish some time on Friday afternoon.

¨       Please sign up to read, steward or help with refreshments.  There will be timetables available in church from the beginning of March.  Don’t forget to make a note of your timeslots in your diary!

¨       You can also contact one of the organisers to put your name down.

¨       Why not come along with your partner or friends and sign up together?   You could sign up for two alternating slots each (eg you from 4.00am-4.20am and 4.40am-5.00am and your partner from 4.20am-4.40am and 5.00am-5.20am), or five of you could sign up to be there for two hours together to take care of all the reading, stewarding and refreshments.

¨       There will be a meeting for anyone who would like to ask questions, or you can contact one of the organisers (details at end).

¨       We are hoping to be able to record the whole event, and hope to be able to sell copies to raise further funds

Readers

¨       20 minute slots

¨       By taking part you agree to being recorded

¨       Please arrive 10 minutes early to allow you time to follow the previous reader in the Bible.  This way the handover will be smooth.

¨       You will be seated to read.

¨       Many readers will want to do more than one slot.  Please think about doing your second and third reading at more inconvenient times to help us fill the timetables.

¨       We are expecting to finish on Friday afternoon, so be aware that if you sign up for late on Friday we may have already completed the Bible.

¨       The steward will indicate when you start and stop reading by placing a hand on your shoulder.  If you are the current reader, you must finish at the end of that verse, and if you are the new reader, you will start at the beginning of the next verse.

Stewards

¨       Your duties are to ensure that the whole project runs smoothly, on time with no hitches!

¨       Two stewards on duty

¨       Extra steward on duty at pub closing time

¨       Please arrive 10 minutes early to allow handover.

¨       Two hour slots between 8am and 11pm

¨       Three hour slots between 11pm and 8am

¨       Greet the next reader when they arrive, and help them to find their place in the Bible.

¨       At the end of each 20 minute reading, place your hands on the shoulders of the two readers, so that the current reader knows to finish at the end of their verse, and the new reader knows to start with the next verse.

¨       Record the verse that each reader starts at (as proof of our completing the task).

¨       If a reader hasn’t arrived, you can contact them using the mobile phone.

¨       In the unlikely event that a reader doesn’t turn up, then one of the stewards will have to do the reading.

¨       Please make sure that the phone doesn’t run out of battery and is switched to silent.

¨       Check the phone for messages. Details will be available in church.

¨       Welcome visitors who want to listen and direct them to refreshments.

¨       Check the recording equipment, details will be available in church.

Refreshments

There are two refreshments timetables:

one for those providing homemade cakes and biscuits (always a bestseller):

¨       If you are providing cakes, please indicate what you will be bringing, so that we can have a range on offer.

¨       Homemade cakes should be brought to church during the timeslots indicated.

and one for those who are helping to serve:

¨       There should be one or two people serving refreshments.

¨       Two hour slots between 8am and 11pm

¨       Three hour slots between 11pm and 8am

¨       During the night and Thursday morning refreshments will be served in the church.

¨       At all other times refreshments will be served in the hall.

¨       Please make sure that the urn in the church is full at 10pm ready for the night.

¨       There will be a price list in the hall and in the church.

¨       A float of between £10 and £20 should be fine.  Please bag up any extra money, label it and post it through Gill’s door (details will be in church).

¨       Homemade cakes will be arriving during the day.

¨       As well as serving the refreshments you will need to wash up and keep the hall tidy.

¨       Cleaning materials are available in the kitchen.

¨       If supplies are running low, please contact one of the organisers (details at end).

Sponsorship

¨       We do need to raise money.

¨       All members of our congregation are asked to help with finding sponsorship.

¨       Please try to raise as much as you can.

¨       To make matters simple, ask people to sponsor you an overall sum for taking part.

¨       If anyone would like to sponsor the whole project, there will be a ‘church sponsor’ sheet at the back of church.

¨       If each person taking part raises a minimum of £20 sponsorship, we will reach our £5,000 target.

¨       Take a look through your address book and contact friends and family whom you hope will sponsor you.

¨       A sample request letter is enclosed, please feel free to photocopy it.

¨       If your sponsor pays tax, then we can claim gift aid, please make sure they fill in all the required details.

¨       A sponsorship form is enclosed.  You can photocopy more or collect another one from church.

¨       Cheques should be made payable to ‘Trinity Church Buildings Fund’.

¨       Sponsorship money should be returned as soon as possible and no later than the end of July 2006.

Organisers

Please contact one of us if you have any queries.

The mobile phone in church during the event  will be switched to silent so you won’t get an answer but you will be able to leave a message.
