Music plays a major part at Trinity Church.

As befits the style of Trinity Church we enjoy a wide range of different musical styles, often incorporating traditional hymn and modern hymns and choruses into one service. This serves to enhance the variety and breadth of Worship in Trinity Church, enabling us to draw on the riches of different eras of Church music, for example Wesley hymns, modern choruses, organ, piano, guitar and band.

Trinity Band

Trinity is really blessed in its musical talent, and the Trinity band musicians are always enthusiastic and willing in making a major contribution to the Worship in Trinity (and elsewhere).

The Trinity band leads our singing in Worship on a regular basis (approximately every fortnight) in morning and evening services, as well as special events and concerts.

The band has approximately 21 members, both young and old. The instruments they play include:

bulletFlute (5)
bulletClarinet (3)
bulletCornet
bulletEuphonium
bulletViolin
bulletSaxophone
bulletBassoon
bulletGuitars(5)
bulletCello
bulletPercussion
bulletKeyboard

The band always perform with great vitality and talent, greatly enhancing worship by their efforts.

You can see the Trinity band on our pictures page.

Singing group

The Singing Group has over the last several years become an established part of Trinity Church tradition and worship. The group boasts some 25 regular singers. In total, close to 50 people have sung with the group since it was formed. Some people may not realise, but the history of the group goes back to around 1990 when the group met purely socially once a month, in members' houses.

The objectives of the group are:

bullet- To encourage and enable anyone who wishes, regardless of musical background, to sing as part of a group.
bullet- To sing 2-3 time in a year. It is not the intention to practice every week. Instead, there are typically 5 to 6 practices, 1 per week, in the run up to the service. This way people know what the commitment is, and we remain fresh and enthusiastic!
bullet- To sing music from all periods from traditional early music through to modern popular songs.
bullet- To sing music from many cultural traditions and origins.

All levels of musical ability are welcome, from never having sung before and can't read music through to experienced musicians. There is lots of "note bashing", so all have confidence with the music.

The music that the group sings is from all styles and ages. We have sung a number of modern songs (Rutter, Goodall), as well as a more traditional repertoire. During 2006 we have sung for Trinity Sunday and a number of times during the Christmas period. We sang some quite traditional and older music.

Hymn books

In line with Trinity's traditions we use more than one hymn book.

We originally chose 'With One Voice' as our major traditional hymnal. This is a hymn book for all the churches, originating from Australia, when a number of denominations got together to produce a contemporary ecumenical hymn book. It is a collection of 579 hymns, published in 1977 (as The Australian Hymn Book) and approved for use by the participating denominations, but offered to all Christians who may wish to use it.

For more modern hymns, songs and Choruses we used 'Junior Praise

However, we have now replaced both of the above and moved on to a new book - Complete Mission Praise.

We also have created our own collection of extra songs we call the Trinity Hymn Book.

Even then its not uncommon to have a new song printed in the notices or on the overhead projector.
