Minister’s Letter

At P3 last Sunday, amongst the countless newspaper articles spreading doom and gloom, a piece of positive and encouraging news was discovered.  One implication of the financial crisis is that families are spending more time together doing family type activities like playing games and going on days out.  Families spent more time and had fun together during our very snowy week too.  It was great to see grown ups and kids having fun together.  It was great to see grown ups simply having fun like children!

As Christians, God has called us into his family.  We are all his children and I wonder, if God had included a third commandment after “love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind” and “love your neighbour as yourself”, whether it would have been along the lines of “have lots of fun together”?!  Perhaps this is implicit in the two we do have.  At times we make heavy weather of our Christianity as individuals, and when we’re together.  I don’t think we spend enough time together in the first place, at least having some fun and looking to live life to the full.  We’re just about to put a wayside pulpit up on the outside of Trinity and are in the process of looking for suitable slogans.  One church had the following up on theirs – “God so loved the world he did not send a committee”!!  We need to hold onto the saying that church exists for the benefit of non-members – how do our non-members see us?

We have our own financial crisis at Trinity and many of us are facing increasingly difficult times at home due to the credit crunch.  We need to be praying for each other and supporting one another as best we can, and finding ways to have fun together.  This may mean we need to do things differently.  Over the next few months I want us to look more closely at our vision at Trinity.  God is loosening us up and challenging us, and we do need to be concentrating on relationship building, more prayer and Biblical teaching.  The question is how best can we do this?  There is much to chew on here and I hope we can work on this during 2009, to develop our vision, building on what we have in place but perhaps having the courage to change, if change is necessary.  And we must make sure we have fun factored in!

If we don’t have sufficient funds, we won’t, of course, be able to do very much.  I’m very pleased to see Gordon’s financial update in this month’s magazine which shows a positive response to the call to review our giving.  Many thanks to all who are doing this.  We do need to press on further.  It’ll be in the next couple of months that we really see how much our giving has increased.  Remember we need to be raising, at least, an extra £1500 per month to snuff out the deficit.  If we then want to develop what we do, we’ll need more than this.  The idea of a part-time youth worker is popular but this will cost us - £500 per month for less than a half-time post.  I’d like a full-time youth worker!!  Last year’s crudely calculated giving figure of £26 per month (based on 200 people giving) really is pitiful.  I don’t know what the average income in Lower Earley is but I’m sure it’s more than £260 per month.  If we calculated our giving on 5% of our income I’m still pretty confident average income is higher than £520 per month!!  We do need to respond to the fact that we’ll run out of money by the end of the year if we don’t turn this situation around.  What will we do then?!

I hope a good number of you are signing up for the Lent groups this year.  Please do give this serious thought and prayer.  There is a good level of choice with some excellent material.  Some, like Alpha, will be familiar to many.  Have a go.  God will always speak to us if we’re listening out for him.  Remember Jesus is knocking on our door.  You may well say you’ve let him in, but have you let him in beyond the threshold?  Are you sitting down with him, and he with you, eating together and so getting to know one another in new and deeper ways?  If you’ve not read the book “The Shack”, I encourage you to do so.  It’s a fascinating example of how we can relate to Jesus, his Father and the Holy Spirit.

It’s when we fall in love with Jesus that our hearts really engage.  Jesus tells us to seek him with ALL our hearts.  It’s then, too, that we’re more likely to have true fun.

Every blessing,

Jon

Reel Issues

Our small group has been keen to explore fun and engaging ways to learn about God whilst also having the potential for outreach.  Then, a visionary within the church suggested Reel Issues – and we thought that it was a great way to combine our mutual love of film and God.  So, we decided to give it a go!

After much plugging, a group of us got together in the church on the evening of 14 February, to see what the hotly anticipated Reel Issues was going to be like.  As all good Christian events tend to do, we started with food and drink (well some popcorn and hot chocolate with marshmallows) and then settled down to watch the first clip from the film “Evan Almighty” – a hilarious film about a guy called Evan who is called by God to build an ark!

We watched several clips from the film and then split off into small groups for discussion.  In these groups, we discussed issues emerging from the clips we had seen.  Topics that were covered included prayer, family and stepping out for God (even if people think you’re crazy for doing it).  It was a fun but thought-provoking night, and people seemed to really enjoy the format.  Watching the scenes and seeing the relationships between the characters or exaggerated circumstances helped bring a fresh perspective to discussions.

There is a scene from the film that really struck a chord with some of the groups: Evan’s wife is struggling to cope with her husband’s erratic behaviour and the huge ark and animals appearing next to her house.  God approaches her in a restaurant as a waiter ‘Al Mighty’ and says: “Let me ask you something.  If someone prays for patience, you think God gives them patience?  Or does he give them the opportunity to be patient?”  It made us reflect: do we look for direct answers for prayer, or do we see the opportunities that God has thrown in our path as part of the answer?  Do we seek out such opportunities to strengthen our faith?  Is going to a Lent group or Reel Issues an opportunity for you?

At the end of the film, Evan asks God why he had to build an ark instead of things being resolved in another way.  God explains that, if you want to change the world, you do it by “one Act of Random Kindness (ARK) at a time.”  So we ended the evening with some reflection about what our acts of random kindness could be.

All in all, we thought it was a great night (although we may be biased!).  Following on from feedback from those who came, we hope to make Reel Issues a monthly event, with the next one being held on Saturday 14 March.  Not all the films will be so overtly about God (ie feature him as a character!), but, as in our everyday lives, our faith cuts across issues explored in films, so there will be plenty to discuss!  We’ve got some great dramas, action, comedies and maybe even a chick flick or two on the list of potential films, so come and join us for the next Reel Issues.  On Saturday 14 March, we’ll be discussing “Good Night and Good Luck” – an Oscar-nominated film by George Clooney about the power of the media and politicians in 1950s America .  People found it useful to watch the film beforehand and we will be buying a copy on DVD, if you would like to borrow it in advance.

Thank you for all your prayer and support for Reel Issues to date.  We hope to see you on 14 March!

Please see the poster in this magazine (on page 26) for more details, or speak to Gemma Keeley or Laura Brannelly.

Oberammergau Holiday

There will be a group of 41 of us, mainly from Trinity, going for a week's holiday in Austria next year.  We will be away from 13 to 20 July 2010.  We'll be staying just outside Innsbruck , with a 2 day, one night, visit to the Oberammergau Passion Play in the middle of our stay.  I have 4 spaces left that I can fill.  If anyone is interested and would like more information, then please do get in touch with me, either in church on a Sunday, or by email.

Youth Led Worship

As part of a joint project between St Peter's, St Nic's and Trinity, we'll be having a youth led time of worship once a month on a Sunday evening which will rotate around the three churches.  This month, it is Trinity's turn to host the event.  The young people will plan and lead the worship themselves, including providing the musicians.  Everyone is welcome and it would be great to see people of all ages at this service.

Finance Update

In last month’s magazine, I gave a long and detailed account of the financial situation at Trinity and those of you who were in church in January would have heard Jon Salmon’s sermons on giving and the part we all play in God’s work.  This month, I’m giving an update and will share the concerns we have.

The good news is that 3 members have changed from giving through envelopes to Standing Orders.  I cannot tell if they have increased their giving, but you can see the combined totals below, and 5 members have increased their Standing Orders in January – again, see the numbers below.  Please remember, some members do not give monthly, some give bi-monthly, some quarterly, so look at the trend over the 5 months given.  From my position, the news is very positive and I think we can look forward to seeing more increases in February and March, as more members increase their giving, and the Standing Order forms we have given out reach the banks.

I was asked recently, “Do I need a new Standing Order form to increase my SO to the Church?”.  The answer is “No”.  All you need to do is go into your bank, or write, or telephone, or email your bank, as you would do normally, and tell them to increase the amount.  This person was so used to signing Direct Debits for, say, Gas or Electricity, and the companies then take a sum each month and can increase the amount by giving you 30 days’ notice and you would do nothing.  A SO has to be changed by the account holder.  However, if you would like a new SO, please see me in church or phone me or email on gordonguile(at)yahoo.co.uk.

Our boiler is over 20 years old

We service the boiler at the church annually and, at the last service, we were advised the boiler could have major problems at any time or it may last another 5 years.  We do not know.  But the message is, it will need replacing in the next 5 years and it will cost £20,000.  Ouch!  We at Trinity are lucky to worship in a warm church and it is the Church Council’s view we wish to continue to worship in a warm church.  So many old church buildings are so cold, however much heat you throw at them.

The plan is, over the next 5 years, we must put away at least £5,000 per annum into a building’s fund to meet this obligation.  “What happens if we have to replace the boiler before we have saved the £20,000?” I hear you say.  Well, the first thing, I hope you agree, is to replace the boiler, second is to find the balance of the money.  There are two ways: firstly we can borrow from one of the denominations, or secondly members of our own church can lend the church the money, interest free hopefully, until we can raise the money by special events, etc.

Denomination increases

Since I wrote last month, the second bit of bad news is the amount of money we pay to the three denominations has gone up £6,000 for 2009.  Life doesn’t get any easier.  Once we know the full amount of the increased giving, say by the end of April, we can respond to the various Churches to say if we can meet these increased costs.  I’m sure there are churches in a worse financial situation than us, and I pray that the extra giving many of our members are now contributing will bridge the large and growing gap in our finances.

I am told that last year several members were requesting more information on giving and the church’s finances generally.  After my first two reports, you may want me to stop.  I’m sorry, I can only report the truth and we all must share the responsibility of the cost of doing God’s work here in Lower Earley , and with His help do more in our area.

Book Review

Red Moon Rising

by Pete Greig & Dave Roberts

Pete Greig is the founder of 24-7 Prayer, an international and interdenominational prayer and mission movement.  There are 24-7 Prayer groups in more than 50 countries and members of the movement have been interceding continually, night and day, since 1999.

The book not only tells the reader of how the 24-7 movement started and grew, but has a variety of inspiring stories of God’s work in Prayer Rooms from around the world (including from one of the original ‘Boiler Rooms’ -  at The Forbury in Reading).

Pete Greig likens the 24-7 prayer movement to the early church.  From Acts 1 - Jesus tells his disciples, “Do not leave Jerusalem , but wait for the gift my Father promised .....  you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses.”  They all joined together constantly in prayer.  Then, at Pentecost, the “Power from on high” descended and the mission of the Church really began.

It is exciting to think that Christians today are following the example of the disciples, with communities seeking to be obedient to the Holy Spirit, praying around the clock, linked in networks and bound together by friendship.

Steve Chalke says of this book: “24-7 is brilliant.  If you’re wanting to combine social involvement with spiritual intimacy, this is an absolutely fantastic tool!”.

Trinity Annual General Church Meeting

The Annual General Church Meeting for Trinity Church will be held at Trinity Church on Monday 16 March 2009 at 8.00pm.  All members of the church, including all those who are regular members of the worshipping congregation and all parishioners, are warmly invited to attend this meeting, which makes important decisions affecting the life of Trinity Church.

A draft copy of the formal agenda is provided below.  A final agenda will be circulated prior to the meeting.   In addition to the normal business of an AGM, there will be important discussions regarding our current financial situation.  In particular, if we are not able to significantly increase our income and/or make some reductions to our expenditure, we will run out money before the end of 2009.  There is also an opportunity for members to consider taking a greater rôle in the work of the church.  There are many posts to be filled and there could be a post that would suit you.  (See the next page for details.)  The business of the AGM should be of concern to all members of the congregation and we hope that everyone will make an effort to be present for this very important meeting.

If you feel you have an important item that you would like considered for inclusion in the final agenda, please let me know.

Rules governing appointments as agreed at Church Meeting December 2007

The meeting was provided with a complete set of definitions of the requirements for appointments to church positions.  These had been approved by Church Council for presentation to Church Meeting.

A. Church Officers (Church Secretary, Senior Steward, Church Treasurer and Church Stewards)

1. Must be church members,

2. Are elected for terms of three years, and

3. May not serve for more than two consecutive terms, in a single capacity after which a break of at least one year is required.

4. Must be proposed in writing prior to the Church Meeting.

5. Are elected by church members at the Church Meeting.

B.  Other Members of Church Council

(This applies to those on Church Council because they have either been elected by Church Meeting as members of Church Council for a two year term, or are representatives of Trinity on denominational councils.)

1. Must be church members.

2. May not serve for more than six years consecutively, in a single capacity.

C.  Other Formal Church Appointments

1.  Should be members of the church community, acceptable to the Church Meeting, who must approve any appointment.

2.  Are elected for terms of three years.

3.   Should normally expect to serve for not more than two consecutive terms.

4. But, where the circumstances are appropriate, may serve more than two terms.

It was noted that in several groups such as Youth Net, Junior Church, Transport teams and various rotas, individuals were not formally appointed by Church Meeting, although in many cases CRB checks were necessary.

Sunday Fellowship Lunches

There is an open invitation for anyone from Trinity to join one of the hosts for Sunday lunch.  Normally, the invitation is for four guests.

The hosts in March are:

1 March          Jan & Peter Whiteman

8 March          Joan & Gordon Guile

15 March          Jill & David Ramsden

22 March          MOTHERING SUNDAY

29 March          Joy & Phil Hooper **

All you have to do is sign up on one of the lists on the Church Notice Board.  So why not take advantage of the invitation, so that you can get to know one another better while enjoying a meal together in an informal setting?

There is no charge; you don’t have to bring anything; there is no expectation of a return invitation.

If you feel uncomfortable having a free meal, you can always give a little extra to the church in your offering.

** If you have young children, Joy & Phil would love to welcome you as a family.

In fact, there can be few reasons not to try a Sunday Fellowship Lunch, so I hope you feel you can take up one of these invitations, if not this month, then later in the year.

If you would like to host a Sunday Fellowship Lunch, have any questions, or would like to know more about the scheme, please feel free to contact me.

Trinity Library

I thought you might like to know which are the 5 most borrowed books, over the years that the library has been open.

The runaway winner is:

Hughes, Gerard         God of surprises                       GRO     31

followed by:

       Long, Anne                Listening                                  PAS      24

Ashwin, Angela          Heaven in ordinary                    PRA      16
(about everyday prayer)

Marshall, Catherine   Helper (= Holy Spirit)                HOL     16

Pilkington, Evan          Learning to pray                        PRA      14

But coming up fast on the rails is -

Cottrell, Stephen      Praying through life                   PRA      11

(by our present Bishop of Reading )

In the light of the above, it’s perhaps not surprising that the most heavily used sections over time have been (in this order):

Prayer, Growth, Bible, Biography, Pastoral care, Relationships, Faith and Questions.

I wonder which section have you browsed through most?  Have you found a particular book that you’d like to recommend to others?  If so, we’d love to hear about it.  Or perhaps there’s an especially helpful book, not in the library, that you could suggest we buy – funds permitting?  If there is, do please let me know, via the pigeonholes.

News from Chalfont District

The District would like to congratulate Cathy Fraser, our Guide Leader.  In February, she collected her Queen’s Guide award at a ceremony in London .  This is an excellent achievement - well done, Cathy.

In January, we went to the pantomime to see “The Snow Queen” at the Shinfield Players’ Theatre.  I enjoyed it, I think everyone else enjoyed it as well.  At Brownies we are collecting information and pictures about Great Britain to make a scrapbook in our sixes.

By Isabelle, 2nd Lower Earley Brownies

This term, we are working towards gaining our World Issues Badge.  As part of getting this badge we had a joint Thinking Day event with Chalfont District.  The theme was India , everyone was asked to dress up in Indian clothes, quite a few of the Brownies, Rainbows, team leaders and helpers did, and they all looked lovely in their bright coloured outfits.  There were lots of crafts for us to do, including making Elephant door hangers and jewel boxes, we also listened and danced to Indian music.  I had a great time and I think everyone else did as well.
