Minister’s Letter

Easter is upon us this month.  It is always an extraordinary festival – the touch of God on a lost world, bringing new hope and new life!

We have been preparing for Easter this year, as a church, in Lent groups focusing on prayer, growing together and opening ourselves to God in new ways.

When the day comes, many of us will be celebrating Easter in church.  Where else would we go?  Faith is not a private matter, despite what some would say.  Those who discovered fearfully that Jesus was risen went to tell others.  In time, those with faith and hope in Jesus Christ formed communities.  They came together, shared together, took risks together and devoted themselves to God and his world together.

And so we do still today.  Church is not a very popular institution in modern times.  It is slated often as irrelevant, old fashioned and inward looking by many and yet and yet ...

It has been really pleasing to see that Trinity’s congregations have been growing through 2007 so far.  In a world which seems lost in its own cynicism and emptiness, people are always looking for something more.

There was a recent study called “Beyond Belief” which listened to 41 people who had made a recent public profession of faith and tried to understand why.

Three key factors stand out:

1.        The importance of other people.  It is people who bring others to Christ – ordinary people – “our son ... my sister ... my gran ... my ex-girlfriend ... this family I teach ... my wife’s colleague.”  Or, in other words, people like you and I!

2.       God. This may seem obvious but in the conversations there was that distinct sense of God in people’s journeys – that the whole of each person’s story was somehow greater than the sum of its parts, that God had become very real.

3.       Church. The importance of Church really stood out, perhaps surprisingly.  People spoke of that “feeling of togetherness and unconditional acceptance, the only unconditional relationship I’ve had in my life”.

Church is the environment in which we have to grow our Easter faith.  It is not always a comfortable place but it should be a real place where we worship, pray, laugh and sometimes struggle together.

Paul sets us high targets:

“Live in harmony with one another.”  (Romans 12:16)

“Carry each other’s burdens.”  (Galatians 6:2)

“Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.” (Ephesians 4:3)

“Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another.”  (Colossians 3:13)

Often we fail lamentably to get anywhere near this and yet ...  sometimes, by the grace of God, he helps us to create a fragile, loving community – a space for broken people to meet a healing Saviour.

So, I hope and pray that this Easter is a time of real celebration and discovery for us all.  And I hope that, as a church, we go forward, renewed and trusting in God for all that he has for us.  That he will help us most immediately to meet the challenge of the completion of the Building Project together.  That he will help us to continue to grow together and share his New Life with the world in which he has placed us.

Happy Easter!

God Bless.

Nick

Furnishing the Chapel

When our new chapel is complete, we will need to be buying some items to furnish it.  Several meetings and discussions have taken place and identified a list of items we will need.

When the church was first built, many people made donations to purchase a particular item of furniture (such as the cross, or the font, or a chair).  Some of the items were dedicated in memory of loved ones – you may have seen the brass plaques, eg on the backs of the chairs.

This is your opportunity to purchase one of the items of furniture for our new chapel (and to dedicate it in memory of a loved one if you wish).

The list of items and their estimated costs are:

Curtains for window

£330

Curtains for doors

£330

Portable Cross

£330

Candle Holders (2)

£220

Table-top lectern

£220

Library Shelving Extension

£440

Wooden dado rail

£330

CD player

£110

(A brass plaque would cost an extra £10.)

If you would like to do this, please let Alex Robinson know (alex(at)robins.plus.com ), who will arrange it for you.

Chocoholics

I have taken £217 of Chocoholics sales, and am taking a combination of chocolates (£10) and cash (£11) for the Buildings Fund which I will donate into the XYZ auction.

Concert

The Trinity Concert Band have sent us a cheque for £1,000 raised by the concert they held for us in February at The Salvation Army Centre.

Many thanks to all involved.

Auction of Promises

Thanks to Gemma Keeley for answering our appeal for help and kindly writing to local businesses, asking for their support for the Auction of Promises.  (See page 21 of this magazine and the March issue for more information about the auction.)

We hope to see lots of people there!

Wanted:  Someone to Join the Photocopying Team

We need someone to join the team of people who photocopy and fold the leaflets for the Sunday services.  This is done on a monthly rota basis and is shared between 4 people.  Unfortunately, one of the team has had to drop out after many years of doing the job and we would like to find a replacement.  The photocopying is usually done on Saturday mornings when the church is open for other activities.  Please contact me if you are interested or want to find out more.

Just Around the Corner Mentoring

Thanks for your support in recent months of JAC and its expanding work in Earley.  Things have been going well; numbers of sessions are increasing and relationships with young people deepening.  We have come to a place where we would like to expand our mentoring work.  Mentoring is a powerful tool in encouraging young people to make positive choices.  The longer a mentorship exists, the greater the benefits for a young person.  We are now looking for new people who would like to mentor a young person.  This work is voluntary, but usually very rewarding.
